The Generation Controversy

So maybe you didn't know about a generation controversy.  The popular view in Christianity today is that we are living in the biblical last days.  There are a 37 verses in the bible that use the Greek word "genea" which is translated in to the English word "generation".  Below I have copied all 37 verses for ease of reading. Read them and decide for yourself what the word "generation" means.  Leave a comment as to what you determine with an explanation to support your definition.



  1. Mat 1:17 NASB - So all the generations[1074] from Abraham to David are fourteen generations[1074]; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations[1074]; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations[1074].
  2. Mat 11:16 NASB - "But to what shall I compare this generation[1074]? It is like children sitting in the market places, who call out to the other children,
  3. Mat 12:39 NASB - But He answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation[1074] craves for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;

  7. Mat 16:4 NASB - "An evil and adulterous generation[1074] seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away.
  8. Mat 17:17 NASB - And Jesus answered and said, "You unbelieving and perverted generation[1074], how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me."
  9. Mat 23:36 NASB - "Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation[1074].

  12. Mar 8:38 NASB - "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation[1074], the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."

  27. Luk 21:32 NASB - "Truly I say to you, this generation[1074] will not pass away until all things take place.
  28. Act 2:40 NASB - And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation[1074]!"
  29. Act 8:33 NASB - "IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION[1074]? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH."
  30. Act 13:36 NASB - "For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation[1074], fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;
  31. Act 14:16 NASB - "In the generations[1074] gone by He permitted all the nations to go their own ways;
  32. Act 15:21 NASB - "For Moses from ancient generations[1074] has in every city those who preach him, since he is read in the synagogues every Sabbath."
  33. Eph 3:5 NASB - which in other generations[1074] was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;
  34. Eph 3:21 NASB - to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations[1074] forever and ever. Amen.
  35. Phl 2:15 NASB - so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation[1074], among whom you appear as lights in the world,
  36. Col 1:26 NASB - that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations[1074], but has now been manifested to His saints,
  37. Hbr 3:10 NASB - "THEREFORE I WAS ANGRY WITH THIS GENERATION[1074], AND SAID, 'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS';

  1. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines generation: the average span of time between the birth of parents and that of their offspring; a body of living beings constituting a single step in the line of descent from an ancestor, etc. Based on that, a generation would be an avearge period of approximately 20 to 30 years. In the "old testament", people lived much longer so a generation may have covered a greater expanse of time. I think the definition of "generation" used in the bible verses covered would have a similar meaning to the definitions given by the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
